ਵਿਆਹ ਦੇਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲੇਪੂਰਵ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੋਨੀਆ ਮੈਨਾਂ ਸੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਟੁਰਿਨ, [[ਇਟਲੀ]] ਵਲੋਂਵੱਲ ੮ ਕਿ.ਮੀ. ਦੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਥਿਤਓਰਬਸਾਨੋ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਰਾਜੀਵ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਵਲੋਂਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤ ਤੱਦਉਦੋਂ ਹੋਈ ਜਦੋਂ ਰਾਜੀਵ ਕੈੰਬਰਿਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਢਨੇਪੜ੍ਹਣ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਹ ੧੯੬੮ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਈ ਜਿਸਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ [[ਭਾਰਤ]] ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੀ।
