'''b''' such a community forming part of a federal republic, esp the United States of America |editor1-first=Della |editor1-last=Thompson}}</ref>। ਰਾਜ ਮੁੱਖ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਰਬ ਸੱਤਾਧਾਰੀ (sovereign) ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਰਾਜ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ ਵੱਖ ਸੂਬਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਰਾਜ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ [[ਕੌਮਾਂਤਰੀ ਕਨੂੰਨ|ਅੰਤਰਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ]] ਵਿੱਚ ਰਾਜ ਤੋਂ ਭਾਵ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
