[[ਮਜ਼ਾਰ ਸ਼ਰੀਫ]] ਜੋ [[ਸੋਵੀਅਤ]] ਕਬਜੇ ਦੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ [[ਸੋਵੀਅਤ]] [[ਨਵਾਜ਼ ਹੁਕੂਮਤ]] ਦਾ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਗੜ੍ਹ ਸੀ ਉੱਤਰੀ ਅਫ਼ਗਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੀ [[ਆਬਾਦੀ]] ਪੰਜ ਲੱਖ ਦੇ ਲਗਪਗ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਰੌਣਕੀ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ [[ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ]], ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਲਬਾਂ, [[ਫ਼ਿਲਮ]] [[ਸਟੂਡੀਓ]] ਅਤੇ [[ਈਰਾਨ]] ਅਤੇ [[ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕਿਸਤਾਨ]] ਨਾਲ ਵਪਾਰ ਦੇ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਦੀ ਹੈਸਿਅਤ ਤੋਂ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਹ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ [[ਮਜ਼ਾਰ-ਏ-ਸ਼ਰੀਫ]] ਇਸ ਬਿਨਾ ਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇੱਥੇ ਇੱਕ ਨਿਹਾਇਤ ਵਸੀਹ ਮਜ਼ਾਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਅਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇੱਥੇ ਹਜ਼ਰਤ ਅਲੀ ਦਫਨ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਮਜ਼ਾਰ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਬਾਰ੍ਹਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਰਕ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਸੰਜਰ ਨੇ ਬਣਵਾਈ ਸੀ ਜੋ [[ਚੰਗੇਜ਼ ਖ਼ਾਨ]] ਨੇ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ। ਮਜ਼ਾਰ ਦੀ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਪੰਦਰਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣੀ।
ਇਹ ਅਫ਼ਗਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਬਲਖ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਹੈ।
