== ਨਿੱਜੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ==
ਨਿਰੁਪਾ ਰਾਏ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਲਸਾੜ, [[ਗੁਜਰਾਤ]] ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ। ਉਸਦਾ ਬਚਪਨ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕੋਕਿਲਾ ਕਿਸ਼ੋਰਚੰਦਰਾਂ ਬੁਲਸਾਰਾਂ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ 15 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਮਲ ਰਾਏ ਤੇ ਉਹ [[ਮੁੰਬਈ]] ਆ ਗਈ। ਉਸਦੇ ਦੋ ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਯੋਗੇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਰਨ ਹਨ। ਫਿਲਮ ਕਰੀਅਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਦਮ ਰੱਖਦੀਆਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਦਲ ਲਿਆ।
In 1946, Roy and her husband responded to an advertisement in a Gujarati paper looking for actors. She was selected and started her acting career with the Gujarati film ''Ranakdevi''. The same year she acted in her first Hindi film, ''Amar Raj''. One of her popular films was ''[[ਦੋ ਬੀਘਾ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ|Do Bigha Zameen]]'' (1953). She largely played mythological characters in the films of the 1940s and 50's. Her image of a goddess was very strong and people would visit her home and seek her blessings.
