1936 ਵਿਚ, ਅੰਬੇਦਕਰ ਨੇ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਲੇਬਰ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ 1937 ਦੀਆਂ ਬੰਬਈ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ 13 ਅਜ਼ਾਦ ਅਤੇ 4 ਆਮ ਸੀਟਾਂ ਲਈ ਕੇਂਦਰੀ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਲਈ ਚੁਣੌਤੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ 11 ਅਤੇ 3 ਸੀਟਾਂ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਰੱਖੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਅੰਬੇਡਕਰ ਬੰਬਈ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਦੇ ਵਿਧਾਇਕ (ਐਮਐਲਏ) ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਚੁਣਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।<ref>{{cite book |last1=Jaffrelot |first1=Christophe |title=Dr Ambedkar and Untouchability: Analysing and Fighting Caste |year=2005 |publisher=C.
