ਸਹਿਵਾਸ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਦੋ ਜਾਂ ਵੱਧ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਆਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਾਉਂਦੇ ਪਰ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਅਕਸਰ ਲੰਮੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਈ ਜਾਂ ਸਥਾਈ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਰੋਮਾਂਟਿਕ ਜਾਂ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਝੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੁਝ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਆਮ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਖਾਸ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਵਿਆਹ, ਲਿੰਗ ਭੂਮਿਕਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਦਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਰੁਝਾਨ ਇਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਤੌਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

ਵਧੇਰੇ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ, ਸਹਿਵਾਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇਕੁਝ ਲੋਕ। "ਸਹਿਵਾਸ" ਕਰਨਾ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ, ਵਿਆਪਕ ਅਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ, "ਸਹਿ-ਹੋਂਦ" ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਚਰਨਾ ਹੈ।[1] ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਪਦ cohabitation ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ cohabit ਤੋਂ 16 ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਮੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਲਾਤੀਨੀ cohabitare ਤੋਂ, ਕੋ - ਇਕਠੇ + Habitare 'ਵੱਸਣਾ'।

ਅੱਜ, ਪੱਛਮੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹਿਵਾਸ ਇੱਕ ਆਮ ਪੈਟਰਨ ਹੈ।

ਯੂਰਪ ਵਿਚ, ਸਕੈਨਡੇਨੇਵੀਆਈ ਦੇਸ਼ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਰੁਝਾਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਮੋਹਰੀ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਸ ਰਾਹ ਤੁਰੇ ਹਨ।[3] ਮੈਡੀਟੇਰੀਅਨ ਯੂਰਪ ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਰੂੜ੍ਹੀਵਾਦੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। 1990 ਦੇ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਮੱਧ ਤਕ, ਇਸ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹਿਵਾਸੀ ਪੱਧਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਸਨ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਧਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।[4]
