ਆਰਡਰ ਦਾ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਨਾਮ, “ਡਰਮੇਪਟੇਰਾ” ਮੂਲ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਯੂਨਾਨੀ ਹੈ, ਡਰਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਚਮੜੀ, ਅਤੇ ਪਾਈਰਨ (ਬਹੁ-ਵਚਨ), ਵਿੰਗ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸਨੂੰ ਚਾਰਲਸ ਡੀ ਗੀਅਰ ਨੇ 1773 ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਆਮ ਸ਼ਬਦ, ਇਅਰਵਿਗ, ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ "ਕੰਨ" ਅਤੇ ਵਿਗੇ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ "ਕੀੜੇ", ਜਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਬਦਿਕ, "ਬੀਟਲ"।<ref name="Walter W.
