ਤਕਨੀਕੀ ਕਲਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਤਾ ਦੇ ਅੰਤਰ-ਸੈਕਸ਼ਨ 'ਤੇ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਅੰਤਰ-ਅਨੁਸ਼ਾਸਨੀ ਖੇਤਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਕਲਾਕਾਰੀ ਤੱਕ ਰਚਨਾਤਮਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ 'ਤੇ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ ਪਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਵਿਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਣਾਤਮਕ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਵਧਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਲੜੀ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਵੱਖੋ-ਵੱਖਰੇ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਖੋਜਕਰਤਾ - ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਲਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ, ਸੰਭਾਲ, ਅਤੇ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ - "ਮੂਲ ਇਰਾਦੇ, ਸਮੱਗਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਤਕਨੀਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਸੰਦਰਭ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਿਸ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਇਸਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਕਾਲੀ ਧਾਰਨਾ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੌਤਿਕ ਵਸਤੂ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਸਮਝ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਅੰਤਰ-ਅਨੁਸ਼ਾਸਨੀ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।[1]
ਕਲਾ ਦੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਣ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਰਫ਼ "ਤਕਨੀਕੀ ਅਧਿਐਨ" ਵਜੋਂ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ, ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਜੋ 1930 ਦੇ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਰਵਰਡ ਆਰਟ ਮਿਊਜ਼ੀਅਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਟਰਾਸ ਸੈਂਟਰ ਫਾਰ ਕੰਜ਼ਰਵੇਸ਼ਨ ਐਂਡ ਟੈਕਨੀਕਲ ਸਟੱਡੀਜ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।[2][3] ਇਹ ਤਕਨੀਕੀ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਵੀਹਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਅੱਧ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਨੁਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਕਲਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਹੋਏ।[4] ਉਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਖੇਤਰ ਇੱਕ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਵਿਦਵਤਾਤਮਕ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੇਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਕਸਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਪਾਠਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸਦੇ ਦਾਇਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਨਿਯਮਤ ਯਤਨ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ।[5] ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਖੇਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਜਵਾਨ ਹੈ, ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਜੋ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਤੱਕ ਵੱਖੋ-ਵੱਖ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।[1][6][7][8] ਇਹ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਖੇਤਰ ਦੀ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ, ਇਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਕਲਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕਾਰਾਂ, ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਮਾਨਵ-ਵਿਗਿਆਨ, ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ, ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ, ਅਤੇ ਭੌਤਿਕ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।[9]
