'ਸ਼ਮਾ ਸਾਵੰਤ' (/ʃɑːmə səˈwɑːnt/)[2] ਸੀਐਟਲ ਸਿਟੀ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਹੈ।[3] ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਸਾਫਟਵੇਅਰ ਇੰਜੀਨੀਅਰ, ਸਾਵੰਤ ਯੂਨਾਈਟਡ ਸਟੇਟਸ ਪਰਵਾਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਸੀਐਟਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਸਮਾਜਵਾਦੀ ਕਾਰਕੁਨ ਅਤੇ ਅਰਥਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਦੀ ਪਾਰਟ-ਟਾਈਮ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਬਣ ਗਈ।[4] ਅਤੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ, ਅਤੇ ਲੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਜ਼ਿਟਿੰਗ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਵੀ ਰਹੀ।[5] ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਚੋਣ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਚ ਘੱਟੋ-ਘੱਟ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਵਧਾਉਣ ਅਤੇ ਅਮੀਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਟੈਕਸ ਲਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਵਾਅਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਸਨ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਕੜੀ ਹਮਾਇਤ ਮਿਲੀ। ਬਾਅਦ ਚ ਸਿਟੀ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਨੇ ਘੱਟੋ-ਘੱਟ 15 ਡਾਲਰ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਘੰਟਾ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਪਾਸ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ।[6]

ਸ਼ਮਾ ਐਚ ਟੀ. ਅਤੇ ਵਸੁੰਧਰਾ ਰਮਨੁਜਮ ਕੋਲ ਪੁਣੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਤਾਮਿਲ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ।[7] ਸਾਵੰਤ ਮੁੰਬਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਵੱਡੀ ਹੋਈ।.[8][9][10] ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਰਿਟਾਇਰਡ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ, ਜੋ ਇੱਕ ਇੰਜਨੀਅਰ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ 13 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਰਾਬੀ ਡਰਾਈਵਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮਾਰੇ ਗਏ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ "ਡਾਕਟਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੰਜਨੀਅਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਗਣਿਤ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ" ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਦੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਵਿਚਾਰਧਾਰਾ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਿਆ।"[11] She describes her family as “full of doctors and engineers and mathematicians” but says that “I wasn’t exposed to any particular ideology growing up.”[12]

ਸਾਵਧਾਨੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ 1994 ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁੰਬਈ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੈਚਲਰ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰੈਜੂਏਟ ਹੋਈ।[13] ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਜ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਵਿਵੇਕ ਸਾਵੰਤ, ਇੱਕ ਮਾਈਕ੍ਰੋਸਾੱਫਟ ਸਾਫਟਵੇਅਰ ਇੰਜੀਨੀਅਰ[14], ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਥਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਥ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਵੱਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਬਦਲਣ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਸ ਨੇ 2003 ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਤਰੀ ਕੈਰੋਲਿਨਾ ਸਟੇਟ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਆਰਥਿਕਤਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੀਐਚਡੀ ਦੀ ਡਿਗਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ।[15] ਉਸ ਦੇ ਖੋਜਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਹਾਤੀ, ਘੱਟ ਵਿਕਸਤ ਆਰਥਿਕਤਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਸਪਲਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ।[16][17]

ਸਾਵੰਤ ਨੇ ਸੰਕੇਤ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਜਵਾਦੀ ਬਣਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਨਾਲ ਦੁਖੀ ਦੇਸ਼ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਜ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਪਹੁੰਚੀ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਉਹ "ਮਨੁੱਖਤਾ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਅਮੀਰ ਦੇਸ਼" ਵਜੋਂ ਲਿਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗਰੀਬੀ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਘਰਤਾ ਦਾ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈਰਾਨੀਜਨਕ ਸੀ। 2006 ਵਿੱਚ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਪਰਚੇ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਸਮਾਜਵਾਦੀ ਬਦਲਵੀਂ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਿਰਕਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਬਣਨ ਲਈ ਅੱਗੇ ਵਧੀ।[18]

ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੀਏਟਲ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ ਟੈਕੋਆ ਦੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਿਖਾਈਆਂ[19][20] ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ ਲੀਡ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਵਰਜੀਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ ਲੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਵੀ ਸੀ।[21]


ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ ਸਟੇਟ ਹਾਊਸ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਨਿਧੀ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਸੋਧੋ

2012 ਵਿੱਚ, ਸਾਵੰਤ ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ ਦੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ ਹਾਊਸ ਦੇ 43ਵੀਂ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿਚ 1 'ਤੇ ਅਸਫਲ ਰਹੀ। ਸਾਵੰਤ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਇਮਰੀ ਅਹੁਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਲਿਖਣ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ। ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਣ ਚੁਣਨ ਦੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਚੁਣੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ, ਪਰ ਲਿਖਣ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦਵਾਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀ ਪਸੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਜ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ। ਸਾਵੰਤ ਨੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਿੰਗਟਨ ਸਕੱਤਰ ਸੈਕਟਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਬੈਲਟ 'ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਸਮਾਜਵਾਦੀ ਵਿਕਲਪਕ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਸੂਚੀਬੱਧ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕੀਤਾ। ਸਾਵੰਤ ਨੇ 6 ਨਵੰਬਰ, 2012 ਨੂੰ ਜਨਰਲ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੜੀਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਚੁਣੌਤੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ।[22] Sawant challenged incumbent Democratic House speaker Frank Chopp in the general election on November 6, 2012. She received 29% of the vote to Chopp's 70%.[23]
