ਮਾਦਰਿਦਮਾਦਰੀਦ ਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਲੁਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਮਾਦਰਿਦਇਸ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਓਚਨੋ ਬਿਅਨੋਰ ਨੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਨੂੰ Metragirta (ਮੇਤਰਾਗਰਿਤਾ) ਜਾਂ Mantua Carpetana (ਮਾਂਤੂਆ ਕਾਰਪੇਤਾਨਾ) ਨਾਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਕਈ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਨਾਂ ਉਰਸਰਿਆ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਹੁਣ ਇਹ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਦੂਜੀ ਸ਼ਤਾਬਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ। ਰੋਮਨ ਸਾਮਰਾਜ ਨੇ ਮੰਜਨਾਰੇਸ ਨਦੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਵਸਣ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਮਤਰਿਸ ਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ। ਸੱਤਵੀ ਸ਼ਤਾਬਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸਲਾਮੀ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਨੇ [[ਇਬੇਰੀ ਟਾਪੂਨੁਮਾ]] ਉੱਤੇ ਫ਼ਤਹਿ ਪਾਉਣ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਇਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਦਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਰਿਟ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਅਰਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਮਾਇਰਾ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।

ਇਸ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਨਵੀ ਸ਼ਤਾਬਦੀ ਵਲੋਂਨਾਲ ਆਇਆ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ - I ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਮਹਲ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਆਦੇਸ਼ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਹ ਮਹੱਲ ਉਸੇ ਥਾਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਸੀ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਅੱਜਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਪਲਾਸੀਓ ਰਿਆਲ ਸਥਿੱਤਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ ।ਹੈ।
