'''ਡੀਜ਼ਲ''' ਜਾਂ '''ਡੀਜ਼ਲ ਬਾਲਣ''' ({{IPAc-en|icon|ˈ|d|iː|z|əl}}) ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਤਰਲ ਬਾਲਣ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਡੀਜ਼ਲ ਇੰਜਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਆਮ ਕਿਸਮ ਕੱਚੇ ਪੈਟਰੋਲ ਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਕਸਰੀ ਕਸ਼ੀਦੀ ਉਪਜ (ਸਪੈਸੀਫ਼ਿਕ ਫ਼ਰੈਕਸ਼ਨਲ ਡਿਸਟੀਲੇਟ) ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਕੱਚੇ ਪੈਟਰੋਲ ਤੋਂ ਨਾ ਬਣਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਕਲਪ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ [[ਬਾਇਓ ਬਾਲਣ#ਬਾਇਓ ਡੀਜ਼ਲ|ਬਾਇਓ ਡੀਜ਼ਲ]], ਬੀ.ਟੀ.ਐੱਲ. ਜਾਂ ਜੀ.ਟੀ.ਐੱਲ. ਤੇਜੀ ਨਾਲ਼ ਵਿਕਸਤ ਅਤੇ ਅਪਣਾਏ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ ਪਟਰੋਲੀਅਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਣੇ ਡੀਜ਼ਲ ਨੂੰ '''ਪੈਟਰੋਡੀਜ਼ਲ''' ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।<ref>Traders and importers now use the term, as well as academic journals for example ACS publications (See 2006 [http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ef0502711 article] on comparing Petrodiesel emissions with other types of fuel).
