ਹੱਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇਉੱਤੇ [[ਰਹਿਤਲ]] ਦੀ ਬੁਨਿਆਦ ਅਤੇ [[ਸਮਾਜ]] ਤੇ [[ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ]] ਦੇ ਥੰਮ੍ਹ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,<ref>UN [[UDHR]] Preamble: "Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world..."</ref> ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਜੀ ਟਾਕਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਅਤੀਤ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੱਕ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਫ਼ਲਸਫ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਸਟੈਨਫ਼ੋਰਡ ਗਿਆਨਕੋਸ਼ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ, "ਹੱਕ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਪਛਾਣ ਵਿੱਚ [[ਸਰਕਾਰ|ਸਰਕਾਰਾਂ]] ਦੀ ਕਿਸਮ, [[ਕਨੂੰਨ|ਕਨੂੰਨਾਂ]] ਦੀ ਸਮੱਗਰੀ ਅਤੇ [[ਸਦਾਚਾਰ]] ਦਾ ਖ਼ਾਕਾ ਘੜਦੇ ਹਨ।"<ref name=tws21decgghg/>
