ਉਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਠੀਕ ਤਰੀਕਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਮੱਤਭੇਦ ਹਨ। [[ਦਿਓਜੇਨਸ ਲਾਏਰਤੀਅਸ]] ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉਹ 500 ਈ.ਪੂ. ਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਸਮਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ,<ref>Diogenes Laërtius, ix. 23</ref> ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਸਦਾ ਜਨਮ 540 ਈ.ਪੂ. ਦੇ ਆਸ-ਪਾਸ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ [[ਪਲੈਟੋ]] ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉਹ [[ਏਥਨਜ਼]] ਆਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ 65 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ [[ਸੁਕਰਾਤ]] ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਸੀ। <ref>Plato, ''Parmenides'', 127a–128b</ref> ਅਤੇ ਜੇ ਇਹ ਸੱਚ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਦਾ ਜਨਮ 515 ਈ.ਪੂ. ਦੇ ਆਸਪਾਸ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ [[ਜ਼ੀਨੋਫੇਨਸ|ਜ਼ੀਨੋਫੇਨਸ]] ਦਾ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਸੀ,<ref>Aristotle, ''[[Metaphysics (Aristotle)|Metaphysics]]'', i. 5; [[Sextus Empiricus]], ''adv.
