ਪਰੋਲਤਾਰੀਆ ਮੂਲ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਲਾਤੀਨੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਰੋਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ। ਹਿਕਾਇਤੀ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਲਾਤੀਨੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ 'ਪ੍ਰੋਲੇਸ' (proles) ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਔਲਾਦ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।<ref name="ref30juveq">[http://books.google.com/books?id=tiNaAAAAYAAJ Western Man and the Modern World: Origins of Western civilization], Leonard Frank James, Pergamon, 1973, ''...
