ਸੈਨਾ ਦੀ ਖੁਫੀਆ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੇ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ, ਆਬੀ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਬਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਸੁਧਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ,[5] ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਥੋਪੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਟਾਈਗਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਘੀ ਅਧਾਰਤ ਸੰਵਿਧਾਨ/ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥਕਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ।[6][7]

ਆਬੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਥੋਪੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਏਰੀਟਰੀਆ ਵਿਚਾਲੇ 20 ਸਾਲਾ ਜੰਗ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰੀ ਜਮੂਦ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਦੇ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਲਈ ਉਸਨੂੰ 2019 ਦਾ ਨੋਬਲ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ।[8]

ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 2021 ਵਿੱਚ, ਅਬੀ ਅਹਿਮਦ ਨੇ ਦੂਜੇ 5 ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਜਕਾਲ ਲਈ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਤ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਸਹੁੰ ਚੁੱਕੀ।

ਅਬੀ ਅਹਿਮਦ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਇਥੋਪੀਆ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਕਾਫਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਂਤ (ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਜਿਮਾ ਜ਼ੋਨ, ਓਰੋਮੀਆ ਖੇਤਰ ) ਵਿੱਚ 15 ਅਗਸਤ 1976 ਨੂੰ ਬਸ਼ਾਸ਼ਾ[9] ਕਸਬੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ।[10][11] ਉਸਦਾ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਪਿਤਾ ਅਹਿਮਦ ਅਲੀ ਓਰੋਮੋ ਕਬੀਲੇ ਦਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ[12] ਸੀ (ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਾਰ ਪਤਨੀਆਂ ਸਨ[13] ), ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਮਾਂ, ਤਾਜ਼ੀਤਾ ਵੋਲਡੇ, ਅਮਹਾਰਾ ਕਬੀਲੇ ਦੀ[14] ਇੱਕ ਆਰਥੋਡਾਕਸ[15] ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਚੀਅਨ ਸੀ।[16][17]

ਆਬੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਹੁ-ਪਤਨੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਾ 13 ਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਛੇਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਛੋਟਾ ਬੱਚਾ ਹੈ।[9][16] ਉਸਦੇ ਬਚਪਨ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਬੀਓਟ (ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ: "ਰੈਵੋਲਿਊਸ਼ਨ") ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ 1974 ਦੀ ਡਰੇਗ ਇਨਕਲਾਬ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਅਕਸਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਆਬੀਓਤ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਇਮਰੀ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਗਰੋ ਕਸਬੇ ਦੇ ਸੈਕੰਡਰੀ ਸਕੂਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖੀ। ਕਈ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਆਬੀ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਨੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਜਾਣ ਲਈ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਤ ਕੀਤਾ।
