''ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ'' ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਮੂਲ ਅਜੇ ਤੱਕ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗ ਸਕਿਆ ਹੈ। ਕੁਝ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ [[ਉਗ਼ੁਜ਼ ਖ਼ਾਗਾਨ|ਉਗ਼ੁਜ਼ ਖ਼ਾਗਾਨ]] ਤੋਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ''ਉਗ਼ੁਜ਼ ਬੇਗ'' ਵੀ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ''ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ'' ਹੋਂਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਇਆ।<ref name="H. 13ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਈਸਵੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ [[ਮੱਧ ਏਸ਼ੀਆ]] ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ [[ਹਿੰਦ-ਯੂਰਪੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ]] ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਸਨ, ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ [[ਸ਼ਕ|ਸ਼ਕ]], [[ਸੋਗ਼ਦਾ|ਸੌਗਦੀਆਈ]], [[ਬੈਕਟ੍ਰਿਆ|ਬੈਕਟ੍ਰੀਆਈ]] ਵਗੈਰਾ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਸਨ। 13ਵੀਂ ਸ਼ਤਾਬਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ [[ਮੰਗੋਲ ਸਾਮਰਾਜ]] ਫੈਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਪੂਰੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਅਤੇ [[ਮੰਗੋਲ]] ਨਸਲ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਛਾ ਗਏ। ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿੰਦ-ਯੂਰਪੀ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੁਰਕੀ-ਮੰਗੋਲ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਸ਼ਰਣ ਹਨ। ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਚਗ਼ਤਾਈ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਸੰਤਾਨ ਹੈ। [[ਬਾਬਰ]] ਇਸੇ ਚਗ਼ਤਾਈ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ [[ਬਾਬਰਨਾਮਾ]] ਵੀ ਇਸੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ [[ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ]] ਵਿੱਚ [[ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ|ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ]] ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਵਿਖਾਈ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਉਜ਼ਬੇਕ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਹਿੰਦ-ਯੂਰਪੀ ਜੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਜ੍ਹਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੈ।
