In the observational astronomy project, astronomers can gain an understanding of objects in the universe by studying them with a telescope. Observational astronomy is the process of collecting and analyzing data to learn about these objects. In this learning project a computer program is used to view and study images taken with a telescope to learn basic concepts in astronomy. This is part of the astronomy project.

Coming soon: A new sub-referencing feature – try it!
Hello. For many years, community members have requested an easy way to re-use references with different details. Now, a MediaWiki solution is coming: The new sub-referencing feature will work for wikitext and Visual Editor and will enhance the existing reference system. You can continue to use different ways of referencing, but you will probably encounter sub-references in articles written by other users. More information on the project page.
We want your feedback to make sure this feature works well for you:
Sign up here to get updates and/or invites to participate in user research activities.
Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes team is planning to bring this feature to Wikimedia wikis later this year. We will reach out to creators/maintainers of tools and templates related to references beforehand.
Important Reminder: The scholarship application deadline has been extended till Thursday, August 22, 2024. We encourage active Wikimedians to submit their applications before the deadline.
Please ensure you review the essential details on Meta page regarding this event.

The next language community meeting is scheduled in a few weeks—on August 30th at 15:00 UTC. If you're interested in joining, you can sign up on this wiki page.
This participant-driven meeting will focus on sharing language-specific updates related to various projects, discussing technical issues related to language wikis, and working together to find possible solutions. For example, in the last meeting, topics included the Language Converter, the state of language research, updates on the Incubator conversations, and technical challenges around external links not working with special characters on Bengali sites.
Do you have any ideas for topics to share technical updates or discuss challenges? Please add agenda items to the document here and reach out to ssethi(__AT__)wikimedia.org. We look forward to your participation!
The Indic MediaWiki Developers User Group is facilitating a community technical consultation process to understand the needs of the community members on various technical issues while contributing to Wikimedia projects. The goal is to better understand the challenges across communities, understand common problems, and streamline future technical development activities.
The first step is a survey where to report your common issues, ideas etc. Please fill the survey (in a language of your choice) at
google form link
The last date is 5 September 2024.
You can fill the survey more than once if you’d like to report multiple issues or ideas.
We are excited to share our July newsletter, highlighting the impactful initiatives undertaken by CIS-A2K over the past month. This edition provides a detailed overview of our events and activities, offering insights into our collaborative efforts and community engagements and a brief regarding upcoming initiatives for next month.
I am pleased to announce the following individual as regional members of the U4C, who will fulfill a term until 15 June 2026:
North America (USA and Canada)
Ajraddatz
The following seats were not filled during this special election:
Latin America and Caribbean
Central and East Europe (CEE)
Sub-Saharan Africa
South Asia
The four remaining Community-At-Large seats
Thank you again to everyone who participated in this process and much appreciation to the candidates for your leadership and dedication to the Wikimedia movement and community.
Over the next few weeks, the U4C will begin meeting and planning the 2024-25 year in supporting the implementation and review of the UCoC and Enforcement Guidelines. You can follow their work on Meta-Wiki.
The Wikimedia Foundation will switch the traffic between its data centers. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster.
All traffic will switch on 25 September. The switch will start at 15:00 UTC.
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
A banner will be displayed on all wikis 30 minutes before this operation happens. This banner will remain visible until the end of the operation.
You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.
You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Wednesday 25 September 2024.
If you try to edit or save during these times, you will see an error message. We hope that no edits will be lost during these minutes, but we can't guarantee it. If you see the error message, then please wait until everything is back to normal. Then you should be able to save your edit. But, we recommend that you make a copy of your changes first, just in case.
Other effects:
Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped. Red links might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual. Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
We expect the code deployments to happen as any other week. However, some case-by-case code freezes could punctually happen if the operation require them afterwards.
We are excited to present our August newsletter, showcasing the impactful initiatives led by CIS-A2K throughout the month. In this edition, you'll find a comprehensive overview of our events and activities, highlighting our collaborative efforts, community engagements, and a sneak peek into the exciting initiatives planned for the coming month.

Dear all,
Apologies for writing in English. Please help to translate in your language.
We are excited to announce the upcoming Wiki Loves Ramadan event, a global initiative aimed at celebrating Ramadan by enriching Wikipedia and its sister projects with content related to this significant time of year. As we plan to organize this event globally, your insights and experiences are crucial in shaping the best possible participation experience for the community.
To ensure that Wiki Loves Ramadan is engaging, inclusive, and impactful, we kindly invite you to participate in our community engagement survey. Your feedback will help us understand the needs of the community, set the event's focus, and guide our strategies for organizing this global event.

We are happy to announce that the Wikimedia Foundation Web team have deployed dark mode here on Punjabi Wikipedia! This was possible because pages on your wiki have passed our checks for accessibility and other quality checks. Congratulations!
This was only possible due to the diligent work of editors and other technical contributors in your community who have made sure that templates, gadgets, and other parts of pages can be accessible in dark mode. Thank you all for making dark mode available for everybody!
For context, we would like to add that the Web team's work on dark mode has concluded. If on some wikis, the option is not yet available for logged-out users, this is likely because many pages do not yet display well in dark mode. As communities make progress on this work, we enable this feature on additional wikis once per month.
If you notice any issues after enabling dark mode, you can report the issues on this page.

Hello everyone, I previously wrote on the 27th September to advise that the Wikidata item sitelink will change places in the sidebar menu, moving from the General section into the In Other Projects section. The scheduled rollout date of 04.10.2024 was delayed due to a necessary request for Mobile/MinervaNeue skin. I am happy to inform that the global rollout can now proceed and will occur later today, 22.10.2024 at 15:00 UTC-2. Please let us know if you notice any problems or bugs after this change. There should be no need for null-edits or purging cache for the changes to occur. Kind regards, -Danny Benjafield (WMDE)11:29, 22 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 2024 (UTC)ਜਵਾਬ

Announcing Wikifile-transfer v2, and second community call
Dear Wikimedia Community,
We are excited to announce the release of Wikifile-transfer v2, an enhanced tool to streamline media transfers across Wikimedia projects. Wikifile-transfer supports users in moving non-free images across wiki projects. This tool is helpful for contributors managing media across multiple language wikis.
We invite you to join our second community call on November 10, 2024, at 18:00 IST (6:00 PM). This meeting is an opportunity to discuss the new features, share feedback, and connect with us.
Since this is a major new release, some bugs may still exist. We encourage you to report any issues you encounter to help us improve the tool further. We're looking forward to your feedback as we continue refining WikiFile-Transfer to meet the needs of our community.
This participant-driven meeting will be organized by the Wikimedia Foundation’s Language Product Localization team and the Language Diversity Hub. There will be presentations on topics like developing language keyboards, the creation of the Moore Wikipedia, and the language support track at Wiki Indaba. We will also have members from the Wayuunaiki community joining us to share their experiences with the Incubator and as a new community within our movement. This meeting will have a Spanish interpretation.
We are excited to Initiate the discussions about India’s potential bid to host Wikimania 2027, the annual international conference of the Wikimedia movement. This is a call to the community to express interest and share ideas for organizing this flagship event in India.
Having a consortium of a good number of country groups, recognised affiliates, thematic groups or regional leaders primarily from Asia for this purpose will ultimately strengthen our proposal from the region. This is the first step in a collaborative journey. We invite all interested community members to contribute to the discussion, share your thoughts, and help shape the vision for hosting Wikimania 2027 in India.
Your participation will ensure this effort reflects the strength and diversity of the Indian Wikimedia community. Please join the conversation on Meta page and help make this vision a reality!

As you must have seen, members from Wikimedians of Kerala and Odia Wikimedia User Groups initiated preliminary discussions around submitting an Expression of Interest (EoI) to have Wikimania 2027 in India. You can find out more on the Meta Page.
Our aim is to seek input and assess the overall community sentiment and thoughts from the Indian community before we proceed further with the steps involved in submitting the formal EOI.
As part of the same, we are hosting an open community call regarding India's Expression of Interest (EOI) to host Wikimania 2027. This is an opportunity to gather your valuable feedback, opinions, and suggestions to shape a strong and inclusive proposal.

Hi all, I recently completed a project, creating nearly 20 videos in five low-resource languages. These languages, Kusunda, Ho, Bonda, and Baleswari-Odia, have few resources and are covered less in Wikipedia. I want to share them with you. I would appreciate it if you could use them in relevant Punjabi Wikipedia articles. Thanks!
We are excited to announce the launch of the Indic writing systems campaign 2025, which will take place from 23 January 2025 (World Endangered Writing Day) to 21 February 2025 (International Mother Language Day). This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts of WikiProject writing Systems to raise awareness about the documentation and revitalization of writing systems, many of which are currently underrepresented or endangered.
Representatives from important organizations that work with writing systems, such as Endangered Alphabets and the Script Encoding Initiative, support the campaign. The campaign will feature two primary activities focused on the list of target scripts:
Wikidata Labelathon: A focused effort to improve and expand the information related to South Asian scripts on Wikidata.
Wikipedia Translatathon: A collaborative activity aimed at enhancing the coverage of South Asian writing systems and their cultural significance on Wikipedia.
We are looking for local organizers to engage their respective communities. If you are interested in organizing, kindly sign-up here. We also encourage all Indic Wikimedians to join us in this important campaign to help document and celebrate the diverse writing systems of South Asia.
Thank you for your support, and we look forward to your active participation.

You are humbly invited to organize the Feminism and Folklore 2025 writing competition from February 1, 2025, to March 31, 2025 on your local Wikipedia. This year, Feminism and Folklore will focus on feminism, women's issues, and gender-focused topics for the project, with a Wiki Loves Folklore gender gap focus and a folk culture theme on Wikipedia.
You can help Wikipedia's coverage of folklore from your area by writing or improving articles about things like folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, women and queer folklore figures, folk game athletes, women in mythology, women warriors in folklore, witches and witch hunting, fairy tales, and more. Users can help create new articles, expand or translate from a generated list of suggested articles.
Organisers are requested to work on the following action items to sign up their communities for the project:
Create a page for the contest on the local wiki.
Set up a campaign on CampWiz tool.
Create the local list and mention the timeline and local and international prizes.
This year, the Wiki Loves Folklore Tech Team has introduced two new tools to enhance support for the campaign. These tools include the Article List Generator by Topic and CampWiz. The Article List Generator by Topic enables users to identify articles on the English Wikipedia that are not present in their native language Wikipedia. Users can customize their selection criteria, and the tool will present a table showcasing the missing articles along with suggested titles. Additionally, users have the option to download the list in both CSV and wikitable formats. Notably, the CampWiz tool will be employed for the project for the first time, empowering users to effectively host the project with a jury. Both tools are now available for use in the campaign. Click here to access these tools
Learn more about the contest and prizes on our project page. Feel free to contact us on our meta talk page or by email us if you need any assistance.

You can help in enriching the folklore documentation on Commons from your region by taking photos, audios, videos, and submitting them in this commons contest.
You can also organize a local contest in your country and support us in translating the project pages to help us spread the word in your native language.
Feel free to contact us on our project Talk page if you need any assistance.
